Vernonia arkansana ‘Mammuth’
Mammuth Arkansas Ironweed Asteraceae
A seriously impressive ironweed with the stature to justify its rather ambitious name. Vernonia ‘Mammuth’ produces sturdy, upright stems topped with large, fluffy heads of rich rosy-mauve flowers from late summer into autumn, making a magnificent statement among grasses and other prairie plants. A selection associated with the celebrated German plantsman Ernst Pagels, it is remarkably well behaved for something of such considerable proportions, forming a strong, architectural clump rather than simply collapsing into a heap. Loved by bees and butterflies, and excellent for extending the season of colour. A truly mammoth plant — fortunately, unlike its namesake, it shows no inclination to become extinct.
Height: 150–200cm
Spread: 50–100cm
Please note: depending on the time of year, some plants may be cut back before dispatch. This is normal horticultural practice and helps ensure plants arrive in good condition and establish strongly after planting.
