Carpathian Alpine Snowbell Primulaceae

A particularly choice Carpathian alpine, Soldanella carpatica is a diminutive evergreen perennial forming neat rosettes of rounded, leathery leaves, from which slender, leafless scapes rise to carry small umbels of nodding violet to purple flowers. The petals are finely fringed, giving the flowers a delicate, almost tassel-like appearance that is characteristic of the genus. Endemic to the Western Carpathians of Poland and Slovakia, it occupies an unusually broad range of montane habitats, from spruce and fir woodland and subalpine tall-herb vegetation to alpine grasslands, calcareous swards and snowbeds. It has been recorded from around 890 to 2,370 m, so this is very much a plant with cold mountains in its CV.

Flowering in spring and sometimes continuing well into summer, S. carpatica is an excellent subject for a shaded alpine trough, rock garden or cool alpine house. It appreciates the combination of moisture and excellent drainage found naturally in mountain soils: humus-rich, gritty soil that never becomes stagnant. A position with good light but protection from the strongest midday sun is ideal, particularly in warmer gardens. The compact habit makes it considerably less demanding in terms of garden real estate than some of the larger Himalayan and European alpines — it manages to look important without requiring planning permission.
