Bhutkeshi •Apiaceae

A particularly choice Himalayan Selinum, collected at around 3,600 m in Arunachal Pradesh, where it grows in the cool, moist conditions of the high mountains. It forms an elegant clump of finely divided, fern-like foliage, sending up tall, slender stems topped with broad, flattened umbels of small white flowers. The effect is wonderfully airy and architectural, rather like a piece of Himalayan meadow transported into the garden. At altitude it is exposed to cool summers and considerable seasonal extremes, making it an excellent candidate for the hardy plant collection. Given a little space, it develops into a substantial perennial without becoming the sort of umbellifer that requires a postcode of its own.

Selinum vaginatum also has a useful ethnobotanical history in the Himalaya. Members of the genus are valued in traditional Himalayan medicine, and the aromatic roots of S. vaginatum have been used locally, including as a traditional medicinal preparation. The plant is therefore interesting not only horticulturally but as part of the long-established relationship between Himalayan communities and their native medicinal flora. As with many traditional remedies, however, historical use should not be taken as evidence of modern medical efficacy.

In cultivation it prefers fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil and is happiest in full sun to light shade. Keep it cool and well watered during prolonged summer drought. The combination of finely divided foliage and clouds of white flowers makes it particularly effective among grasses, ferns and other meadow perennials.
