Sanguisorba 'Red Sentinel'
Greater Burnet Rosaceae
A superb chance seedling selected at Edulis Nursery, distinguished by its self-supporting habit, strong upright stems and exceptionally long flowering season. The finely divided foliage forms a handsome basal clump, above which the slender stems carry rich deep red flowerheads with the characteristic bottlebrush form of Sanguisorba. Flowering over an extended period, it brings movement and colour to the border without the tendency to flop that can affect taller burnets.
Introduction: ‘Red Sentinal’ was selected at Edulis Nursery as a chance seedling and retained for its particularly good garden characteristics. Its naturally self-supporting stems and prolonged flowering make it an especially useful selection for naturalistic and prairie-style planting.
Grow in full sun or partial shade in a fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. It is particularly effective planted among grasses and late-season perennials, where the airy flowerheads remain attractive for many weeks and continue to provide food for pollinating insects.
