Korean Burnet Rosaceae

A graceful and unusually attractive burnet, forming a clump of finely divided, slightly glaucous foliage from which slender stems rise to carry long, fluffy, rose-pink flowerheads, the pendulous bottlebrushes giving the plant considerable movement in summer breezes. Flowering from July into September, it is an excellent choice for naturalistic planting, prairie borders and pollinator gardens. The flowers are nectar-rich and particularly attractive to bees and other insects.

‘Pink Brushes’ is a cultivar of uncertain published parentage, and I would avoid assigning a species or breeder without stronger evidence. It is now well established in British specialist horticulture and is recognised by the RHS as an accepted cultivar. The RHS gives it an eventual height of 1.5–2.5m, although plants in cultivation are commonly maintained at around 90cm–1.2m.

Grow in full sun or partial shade in moderately fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Avoid excessively rich soil, which can encourage soft growth and flopping. The tall, airy stems may require support in exposed gardens. Cut back after flowering or leave the attractive seedheads standing for winter structure.

Flowering: July–September
Hardiness: H7, below –20°C
Height: 90cm–1.2m
Spread: 60–90cm
