Sanguisorba 'Chinese Winter' AGM
Dwarf Burnet Rosaceae
A choice, early-flowering dwarf Sanguisorba, forming a compact clump of dark green, finely serrated, pinnate foliage and producing short stems topped with neat pure-white, tassel-like flower spikes. The flowers open from greenish buds in June and July, making this an unusually early and compact burnet, and an excellent choice for the front of a border, prairie planting or naturalistic scheme. It has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit, awarded in 2021.
The precise parentage and origin of the selection do not appear to be published, although it is consistently described in horticultural sources as a Chinese selection.
Grow in full sun or partial shade, in a moderately fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. It should not be allowed to become excessively dry during the growing season. A particularly useful Sanguisorba where the taller species would overwhelm smaller planting.
