Arctic Raspberry Rosaceae

A delightful, low-growing, thornless arctic bramble forming slowly spreading clumps of trifoliate foliage, with attractive deep pink flowers in May and June, followed by small, intensely aromatic red fruits with a distinctive pineapple-like flavour. This clone is particularly valuable for its fruit quality and as a breeding and pollination partner for other forms of Rubus arcticus. The species is naturally self-incompatible, so two genetically different clones are required for reliable fruiting.

Breeding potential: Clone A is particularly useful where a compatible pollinator is required. Edulis recommends growing it with ‘Marika’, which provides the genetically distinct pollen necessary for fruit set. More broadly, R. arcticus cultivars are obligately cross-pollinated, and different cultivars and clones can be used together. Suitable partners documented in cultivation include ‘Mespi’, ‘Mesma’, ‘Pima’, ‘Elpee’, ‘Marika’, ‘Muuruska’, ‘Susanna’ and ‘Alli’.

The species has also played an important role in breeding hybrid arctic brambles with R. arcticus subsp. stellatus. Established hybrid cultivars include ‘Aura’, ‘Astra’, ‘Anna’, ‘Beata’, ‘Sofia’ and ‘Linda’. Experimental plantings have demonstrated successful pollination between several combinations of arctic bramble and hybrid arctic bramble cultivars.

Grow in full sun or light shade in a cool, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. It is particularly well suited to woodland edges, peat gardens and other cool, acidic conditions. Hardy and naturally adapted to northern climates.
