Rhodohypoxis baurii 'Perle'

A charming dwarf selection of the South African Rhodohypoxis baurii, forming compact tufts of narrow, grassy foliage and producing a succession of pure white, star-shaped flowers with subtly pink-flushed throats throughout summer. The flowers are held just above the foliage, creating a particularly effective display in alpine troughs, rock gardens and containers.

Introduction: ‘Perle’ belongs to the historic group of Rhodohypoxis cultivars associated with Mrs Ruth McConnel, an important early British grower and raiser of the genus. Her daughter, the celebrated plantswoman Valerie Finnis, recorded that her mother raised numerous Rhodohypoxis cultivars from seed and that she subsequently added ‘Perle’ to the collection. It is therefore best regarded as a McConnel/Finnis selection, rather than attributing it solely to a named breeder.

Native to the high-altitude grasslands and rocky areas of South Africa and Lesotho, R. baurii is adapted to summer rainfall and comparatively dry winters. Grow in full sun and very well-drained, gritty soil, preferably enriched with humus. Protection from prolonged winter wet is important; an alpine house, cold frame or raised bed is ideal. Allow the plants to become relatively dry when dormant.
