Himalayan Rhubarb Polygonaceae

A magnificent architectural perennial, forming a large clump of deeply palmately divided leaves, emerging in spring in rich rosy-purple, before gradually maturing to dark green while retaining a deep purplish colour beneath. The tall, branching flower stems carry masses of small cherry-red to bright pink flowers, followed by attractive translucent rose-red seed capsules. It is one of the most dramatic of the ornamental rhubarbs, particularly effective beside ponds, streams and other moisture-retentive planting.

The species is native to northern and central China, Tibet and northern Vietnam, where Rheum palmatum has a long history of medicinal use. Its dried rhizome and roots, known as dà huáng in Chinese herbal medicine, have traditionally been used as a strongly acting purgative and for a range of digestive complaints. The leaves should not be eaten, containing significant levels of oxalic acid; this cultivar is grown principally as an ornamental rather than a food rhubarb.

Grow in a deep, fertile, humus-rich and reliably moisture-retentive soil, in full sun or partial shade. Give it plenty of space and protect the crown from prolonged drought. The large foliage makes an exceptional backdrop for bold woodland and waterside planting.
