Solomon’s Seal 'Weihenstephan' Asparagaceae

A Solomon’s seal that clearly believes bigger is better! ‘Weihenstephan’ is a particularly vigorous garden hybrid, producing elegant, strongly arching stems clothed with broad, glossy green leaves. The pendent, tubular flowers are cream-white with green tips, borne in clusters of two to four beneath the stems in late spring, and are followed occasionally by dark blue-black berries. The foliage often develops attractive yellow tones in autumn.

Polygonatum × hybridum is the hybrid between P. multiflorum and P. odoratum, and ‘Weihenstephan’ is the particularly vigorous selection that has become the best-known form of this garden hybrid. It is associated with the Weihenstephan horticultural gardens in Bavaria, Germany, and was introduced into European horticulture as a garden selection. The cultivar is now well established in the trade and has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

An excellent plant for moist, humus-rich woodland soils, forming an increasingly substantial clump through its slowly spreading rhizomes. It tolerates both partial and full shade and, given sufficient moisture, can also be grown in more open positions. Particularly good beneath deciduous trees, where the arching stems provide strong architectural structure.
