 Burnet-Saxifrage Apiaceae

A choice and rather unusual member of the umbellifer family, Pimpinella tripartita forms an elegant clump of finely divided foliage, topped in summer by airy umbels of small white flowers. The delicate, almost cloud-like flowerheads give it considerable charm in a naturalistic planting, particularly when allowed to weave through grasses and other perennials. Native to the Caucasus and neighbouring regions, it was first introduced to our collection from seed brought back from our first expedition to Georgia in 2010. In parts of the Caucasus, Pimpinella tripartita has also been used traditionally as a medicinal herb and spice. Best grown in fertile, well-drained soil that does not become excessively dry, where its airy habit can mingle naturally with grasses and other perennials.
