Peltoboykinia Saxifragaceae

A splendid Japanese woodland perennial with a distinctly tropical air, Peltoboykinia watanabei produces large, shiny, rounded, peltate leaves that make a handsome architectural clump, rather like a miniature Rodgersia with considerably more Japanese restraint. In early summer, slender, upright stems carry loose panicles of delicate, pale yellow flowers above the foliage. Endemic to Japan, it is a plant of cool, damp woodland and mountain habitats, and should be grown in humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil in partial shade. Deciduous and reliably hardy, it is particularly effective planted amongst ferns and other choice woodlanders, where its bold foliage provides excellent contrast without becoming overbearing.

Height: 60–90cm
Spread: 45–60cm
Flowering: June–July
Hardiness: H5 (-15 to -10°C)
