Peltoboykinia tellimoides
Yamato-so Saxifragaceae
A rather splendid member of the Saxifrage family, Peltoboykinia tellimoides is one of those woodland plants that seems to have been designed by someone who thought Tellima needed considerably larger leaves. The bold, maple-like foliage forms a handsome, spreading clump, from which rise slender stems bearing airy sprays of small, creamy-yellow flowers in early to midsummer. Native to the cool, moist forests of Japan, it is happiest in humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil in light to moderate shade, where it makes an excellent architectural ground-level companion to ferns, Arisaema and woodland perennials. Deciduous and entirely hardy, it is an understated but thoroughly elegant plant for the naturalistic garden.
