Paris quadrifolia
Herb Paris Melanthiaceae
Herb Paris is one of those plants that makes a woodland look genuinely ancient—even when the trees are rather less venerable than they pretend to be. This distinctive rhizomatous perennial produces a solitary upright stem topped by a remarkably symmetrical whorl, normally of four broad, glossy green leaves. From the centre rises a single, curious flower with green tepals and numerous yellow-green stamens, followed by the unmistakable blue-black berry.
Paris quadrifolia has an exceptionally broad Eurasian distribution, extending from Europe eastwards through Russia and the Caucasus to Siberia, Mongolia and northern China. In Britain it is principally a plant of moist, calcareous woodland, particularly on base-rich soils and limestone, and it can persist beneath quite deep shade.
It is also one of our most useful ancient woodland indicator plants. Its poor ability to colonise newly created woodland and its predominantly vegetative spread mean that established populations can provide evidence of long continuity of woodland conditions. The Woodland Trust includes Herb Paris among its recognised ancient woodland indicator species.
There is an important qualification, however: finding a single plant does not prove that a wood is ancient. Herb Paris should be considered alongside a suite of indicator species and other evidence such as old woodland boundaries, veteran trees and archaeological features.
The berries and other parts are poisonous, so this is strictly a plant for admiring rather than sampling. Kew records it as an ornamental species and notes its preference for damp, shady, often calcareous habitats.
