Paris incompleta
Herb Paris Melanthiaceae
A Paris that sounds unfinished, but is actually rather beautifully put together. Paris incompleta is a distinctive and relatively uncommon member of this wonderfully architectural genus, forming solitary upright stems from short rhizomes and carrying a neat whorl of broad, glossy green leaves. The symmetry is unmistakably Paris, although the flowers are rather less elaborate than those of some of its better-known relatives.
In spring, a solitary flower is held above the foliage, composed of greenish-yellow tepals and numerous contrasting stamens, giving it the curious, almost mechanical appearance characteristic of the genus. A single berry follows, developing as the season progresses.
Its name, incompleta, refers to the reduced or apparently incomplete floral structure compared with related species. The taxonomy of Paris has been notoriously complicated, with the number and limits of species differing between botanical treatments.
The species has a decidedly Caucasian and Anatolian distribution, occurring from north-eastern Türkiye through the Transcaucasus to the northern Caucasus, including Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. It inhabits cool, moist mountain woodland and forest margins, making it an excellent candidate for the temperate woodland garden.
A choice plant for the shaded woodland garden, where its solitary, geometric habit provides a wonderful contrast to ferns and softer woodland perennials.
