The foliage is considerably larger and more substantial than that of the familiar Ophiopogon japonicus, giving it a particularly bold presence. The RHS records ‘Vittatus’ as synonymous with the frequently encountered name ‘Variegatus’.

In summer, stout flowering stems carry racemes of small, bell-shaped white flowers, often with a lilac tinge, followed by wonderfully conspicuous blue to violet-black berries. An American specialist nursery records obtaining a single clump from a small specialist nursery in Japan, where it was given as a gift by the nursery owner. The accession was subsequently divided and distributed among the collecting party. This particular account describes exceptionally long leaves—over 75cm in favourable conditions—and notes its tight, clump-forming habit.

The species itself is native to Japan and Korea, including Jeju-do, with O. jaburan extending through western and southern Japan to the Nansei-shoto.

An excellent evergreen for shade, woodland edges, containers or as a bold groundcover, ‘Vittatus’ tolerates surprisingly dry conditions once established but is happiest in fertile, moisture-retentive soil.
