Nephrolepsis obliterata
Kimberley Queen Fern Nephrolepidaceae
A handsome Australian sword fern with a distinctly more aristocratic air than its common name might suggest. Nephrolepis obliterata forms a substantial, upright clump of glossy, deep-green fronds, each capable of reaching around 1.5 m, with broad, strongly arching pinnae giving the plant a wonderfully architectural silhouette. Native to tropical and subtropical northern and eastern Australia, it is a fern of moist forest, rainforest margins and sheltered streamside habitats, appreciating humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil and protection from drying winds and harsh midday sun. Unlike some Nephrolepis, it is notably well behaved and non-running, making it an excellent specimen for a shady border or large container. Evergreen in mild conditions, though growth slows markedly in cold weather.
