Purple Moor Grass Poaceae

A grass that has apparently taken the concept of “see-through planting” rather seriously. ‘Transparent’ forms a handsome clump of arching, green foliage, but its real magic begins in summer when a multitude of remarkably fine, wiry stems rise high above the leaves, carrying delicate purple flowerlets in an almost weightless haze. Held well above the foliage, the open panicles catch every breeze and seem to dissolve into the surrounding planting, while autumn brings glowing gold, orange and raspberry tones to both leaves and stems. Selected by the celebrated German plantsman Ernst Pagels, it is one of the great grasses for creating height without visual heaviness. Naturally associated with moist meadows and moorland, it appreciates moisture-retentive soil but is remarkably adaptable provided it does not become excessively dry. Excellent in naturalistic planting, mixed borders and as a transparent veil among perennials.
