Libertia procera (syn. Libertia chilensis Procera Group.)
New Zealand Satin Flower Iridaceae
A striking, vigorous member of the New Zealand irises, Libertia procera forms substantial clumps of long, linear, evergreen foliage, from which tall, stiff flowering stems rise well above the leaves. In late spring and early summer these carry clusters of pure white, iris-like flowers, each with a conspicuous golden centre. It is a particularly impressive Libertia when in full flower, with mature plants potentially reaching around 1–1.5m in bloom.
There is, however, an important nomenclatural wrinkle. Libertia procera is not currently recognised as a distinct species by the taxonomists. Modern treatment places the plant within Libertia chilensis, with the large, vigorous plants traditionally sold as L. procera treated as _Libertia chilensis ‘Procera’ Group. The RHS currently uses Libertia chilensis Procera Group.
For horticultural purposes, L. procera remains a useful and widely encountered name, particularly for these exceptionally large forms. Give it sun or light shade, shelter from strong winds and fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
