Autumn Ox-eye Asteraceae

A late-season daisy of impressive proportions, Leucanthemella serotina is the plant to reach for when the summer border is beginning to run out of enthusiasm. Native to central and eastern Europe, this robust perennial produces tall, upright stems clothed in dark green, lance-shaped leaves, topped from late summer into autumn by an abundance of large, crisp-white flowerheads.

The flowers are classic daisies writ large: broad white rays surround a prominent yellow central disc, with each flowerhead held on a surprisingly elegant stem despite the plant’s considerable height. Flowering when many perennials are winding down, it is particularly valuable for extending the season and provides welcome late forage for bees and other insects.

Give it a sunny position and a fertile, moisture-retentive soil. It is happiest where the ground does not dry out during summer, and its height makes it particularly effective towards the back of a herbaceous border or threaded through naturalistic planting. A statuesque perennial without the usual late-season fuss.
