False Anemone Ranunculaceae

A delightful little European woodland perennial, Isopyrum thalictroides is the sort of plant that rewards close inspection rather than shouting for attention from across the garden. Its finely divided, almost fern-like foliage emerges early in the year, forming neat, low clumps, above which appear numerous small, pristine white flowers in spring. The delicate appearance belies a tough and long-lived nature, making it an excellent choice for naturalising in a shady border or woodland garden.

Its natural range covers much of central and southern Europe, extending from France, Spain and Italy through Switzerland, Austria, Hungary and the Balkans into Poland, Ukraine and the Baltic region. Kew recognises it as a distinct species within Isopyrum, rather than treating it as a Thalictrum.

In the wild it is associated particularly with deciduous woodland and scrub, favouring fertile, humus-rich soils that remain reasonably moist in spring but are not permanently wet. In cultivation, provide dappled shade or light woodland conditions and a good soil enriched with leaf mould. Like many spring woodlanders, it makes much of its growth before the canopy closes and subsequently retreats underground, making it an excellent companion for later-emerging perennials.
