Geranium maculatum ‘Espresso’
Hardy Geranium Geraniaceae
A superb dark-leaved selection of the North American wild geranium, ‘Espresso’ brings a touch of woodland drama without sacrificing the charm of the species. Its deeply lobed foliage emerges a rich chocolate-maroon, forming a handsome clump beneath the loose stems of soft lavender-pink flowers in late spring. The foliage can become somewhat greener as summer progresses, but generally retains enough bronze colouring to provide a useful contrast with the surrounding planting. It is particularly effective alongside silver, chartreuse and golden foliage.
Unlike many modern cultivars, ‘Espresso’ has a nicely documented history. It was found as a chance seedling by Dale Hendricks on his wooded property in Landenberg, Pennsylvania. Hendricks isolated the plant, propagated it at North Creek Nurseries, and recognised its potential as a distinctive native selection. North Creek describes it as one of its North Creek Unique™ introductions rather than the result of a conventional breeding programme.
The species itself is native to eastern North America, growing naturally in woodland and woodland margins. ‘Espresso’ is happiest in humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil in partial shade, although some sun helps maintain the darkest foliage. A useful and attractive plant for the naturalistic or woodland garden, and an excellent early-season resource for pollinating insects.
