Galanthus plicatus ‘Zeitgeist’

A distinctive green-tipped form of Galanthus plicatus, Galanthus ‘Zeitgeist’ is a handsome snowdrop with the broad, strongly plicate foliage characteristic of the species and neatly formed flowers carrying an unusually clear green suffusion to the tips of the outer segments. The green colouring gives the flowers a crisp, contemporary appearance, particularly when viewed against the darker winter foliage, while the substantial flowers and sturdy habit retain the classic character of G. plicatus. A plant with considerable individuality rather than simply another green-marked snowdrop, ‘Zeitgeist’ is particularly attractive in a well-established clump.

Origin: Found in 2011 by Paul in the garden of Bill Baker, where it occurred as a distinctive green-tipped form of Galanthus plicatus. The plant was subsequently selected and brought into cultivation as ‘Zeitgeist’. Released for sale in 2015.

A strong garden plant: ‘Zeitgeist’ is an appealing choice for collectors of green-marked snowdrops, combining the robust garden performance of G. plicatus with unusually clear green tipping. The flowers have sufficient size and presence to stand out in a collection without relying on excessive marking, while the broad plicate foliage provides an attractive architectural element. It is particularly good when planted where the flowers can be examined at close quarters.

In the garden: Grow in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial shade or an open position with good winter light. Like other snowdrops, it should remain reasonably moist during active growth but should not be subjected to waterlogging, particularly during summer dormancy. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering and avoid unnecessary disturbance once established. Particularly effective beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, in woodland-style planting or in a dedicated snowdrop bed where its green-tipped flowers can be appreciated.
