Galanthus ‘Welshway’

A handsome double hybrid of G. elwesii × G. nivalis ‘Flore Pleno’, discovered in 1995 in the garden of Hugh and Hilary Purkess at Welshway, near Cirencester, Gloucestershire. The flowers are neatly rounded, with narrow, rather twisted outer segments surrounding a full, ruffled centre, and a touch of green towards the segment tips. Similar in character to ‘Heffalump’, but distinctly taller and with more rounded flowers, making a particularly attractive clump when flowering freely. The name commemorates the Purkesses’ garden, Welshway — itself named after the ancient route towards Wales, rather than indicating Welsh origin.
