Galanthus plicatus ‘Upcher’

An old Norfolk snowdrop with a particularly strong sense of place. Found around 1950 in Sheringham Park, Norfolk, when the estate was still the home of the Upcher family, this vigorous form of Galanthus plicatus has broad, sage-green pleated leaves and relatively small, neatly formed white flowers. Its modest flowers are more than compensated for by its reliability and ability to bulk up, making it especially effective when naturalised in woodland or beneath deciduous trees. The name commemorates the Upcher family of Sheringham Hall, whose estate was later given to the National Trust. A genuine piece of Sheringham’s horticultural history and a snowdrop that looks particularly at home in quantity.
