A snowdrop with an unusually personal provenance, ‘Uli’s Gift’ was given to Wol and Sue Staines by Uli, the driver of the renowned German galanthophile Hagen Engelmann. The plant subsequently became part of the Staines’ celebrated collection at Glen Chantry, Essex, where it was preserved and propagated. Its name is therefore quite literal, commemorating Uli, the person who gave the plant to the Staines.

A handsome yellow-marked snowdrop, ‘Uli’s Gift’ develops attractive yellow colouring as the flowers mature, with the markings becoming increasingly pronounced. Its history gives it particular interest to collectors, linking the important German Galanthus world of Hagen Engelmann with the remarkable snowdrop collection developed by Wol and Sue Staines in Britain.

Cultivation: Grow in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial or dappled shade. Good winter light encourages the strongest yellow colouring. Avoid prolonged summer drought and allow the foliage to mature and die back naturally after flowering.

Flowering: February–March
Hardiness: H5, approximately −15 to −10°C
Height: 15–20cm
Spread: 10–15cm
