Galanthus ‘Trymming’

A striking and distinctive snowdrop from the modern Trym line, Galanthus ‘Trymming’ is particularly noted for the bold green markings carried on the outside of its outer segments. The flowers have the characteristic modern, sculptural appearance associated with Trym-type snowdrops, with the outer segments reflexing to reveal their strong green patterning, while the inner segments carry a large inverted-V marking. The effect is unusually graphic and immediately recognisable, particularly when viewed from the side. At around 20cm tall, it makes a substantial clump and combines strong flower character with the robust garden performance for which it has become valued. 

Origin: ‘Trymming’ was selected by Alan Street of Avon Bulbs and was first listed by Avon in 2013; Avon records its discovery at a copse at Mid Lambrook. It is associated with the Galanthus ‘Trym’ group and is widely understood to have originated as a seedling of ‘Trym’. The selection has subsequently become established as one of the better-known modern Trym-related snowdrops. 

A strong garden plant: ‘Trymming’ is an excellent choice for anyone who likes snowdrops with strong markings and plenty of visual impact. The large flowers, bold green exterior markings and relatively substantial stature make it particularly effective when planted where the flowers can be viewed from the side as well as from above. It is also regarded as more robust than ‘Trym’, and forms good clumps given suitable conditions. 

In the garden: Grow in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial shade or an open position with good winter and early-spring light. Snowdrops should not be allowed to become excessively dry while in active growth, although drainage is important during summer dormancy. ‘Trymming’ is particularly effective beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, in a woodland-style planting or in a dedicated collection where its strongly marked flowers can be appreciated at close quarters.
