Galanthus ‘Tring'

A distinctive seedling of ‘South Hayes’, originating in the garden of Margaret and John Noakes at Tring, Hertfordshire. The flowers carry a particularly bold, broad green mark across the outer segments, echoing the strong green patterning of its parent but producing a character of its own. The outer segments flare slightly as the flower matures, displaying the green markings prominently against the white ground, while the inner segments carry complementary green markings.

The Noakes garden became well known for its collection of rare snowdrops, and their close friendship with Wol Staines of Glen Chantry provided an important connection with the wider snowdrop world. ‘Tring’ was subsequently introduced by Glen Chantry, preserving this distinctive Noakes garden seedling in cultivation. Its combination of strong provenance, bold outer markings and attractive flower form makes it a particularly worthwhile cultivar for the collector.

Best grown in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial shade. Allow established clumps to remain undisturbed, when the distinctive flowers can be appreciated at close quarters.
