One of the finest of the Greatorex doubles, ‘Titania’ produces exceptionally neat, regular flowers, with a full rosette of white inner segments carrying a bold horseshoe-shaped green mark. The flowers are held prominently above distinctive, narrow, widely splayed grey-green foliage, giving the plant an unusually upright and elegant appearance. A double snowdrop with a touch of Shakespearean drama—and, appropriately, named for the fairy queen in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Origin: Raised by Heyrick Greatorex (1884–1954) at his nursery at Witten, Norwich, as part of his celebrated series of Greatorex double snowdrops. ‘Titania’ was named in keeping with Greatorex’s practice of using Shakespearean characters for many of his selections.

In the garden: A vigorous and reliable clumper, flowering from February into March. It performs best in moisture-retentive, humus-rich soil in partial shade and is particularly effective planted in groups beneath deciduous trees.
