Galanthus ‘Sutton Court’

A large-flowered hybrid snowdrop from Sutton Court, Herefordshire, dating from the 1990s and originating in the historic garden of the former Backhouse family home. Rarely offered, it is a remarkably impressive plant, with tall stems carrying exceptionally large, substantial and rounded flowers. The broad white outer segments give the flowers considerable presence, while the inner segments carry a neat inverted-V green marking towards the apex.

A vigorous and handsome snowdrop that deserves to be much better known. Indeed, Avon Bulbs has likened it to ‘S. Arnott’ in stature and impact — a bold comparison, but one that reflects the sheer size and quality of its flowers.

The Sutton Court garden has a particularly distinguished snowdrop history, later becoming the source of numerous cultivars selected by Veronica Cross, although ‘Sutton Court’ itself predates many of her named selections. 

Cultivation: A robust and easily grown snowdrop for humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial shade. Excellent beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, where the tall stems and unusually large flowers can be appreciated to their full advantage. Fully hardy.
