Galanthus nivalis ‘Susan Grimshaw’

A charming late-flowering form of Galanthus nivalis, named by John Grimshaw for his mother, Susan Grimshaw, to mark a special birthday. A particularly personal addition to the snowdrop canon, it is also a useful late-season cultivar, coming into its own when many of the earlier G. nivalis have already finished.

The flowers are typically well-proportioned and elegant, with pure white outer segments and neatly marked green inner segments, held above the foliage on slender stems. John Grimshaw himself noted it as “a late-season snowdrop”, at its peak in early March. 

A lovely example of a snowdrop whose significance is as much in its story as in the plant itself — a birthday tribute that has become a garden-worthy cultivar in its own right.

Cultivation: Best grown in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial shade. Excellent for naturalising beneath deciduous trees and shrubs. Fully hardy and liable to increase well when established.
