Galanthus 'S Arnott'

A true snowdrop classic and one of the great old cultivars still earning its place. ‘S. Arnott’ is vigorous and relatively large, carrying elegant, rounded white flowers on sturdy stems. The outer tepals are beautifully proportioned, while the inner segments carry a thin, inverted V-shaped green mark. Best of all, the flowers are strongly honey-scented, particularly in sunshine. 

Origin: Discovered growing in the garden of Samuel Arnott, a Scottish gardener and keen galanthophile, in the late 19th century. Arnott passed plants to Henry Elwes, who grew it at Colesbourne Park. It was originally known as ‘Arnott’s Seedling’ before E. A. Bowles renamed it ‘S. Arnott’ in the 1950s. 

In the garden: A vigorous, dependable snowdrop that increases well and is particularly valuable for its size, fragrance and reliability. Excellent for naturalising beneath deciduous trees and shrubs. RHS Award of Garden Merit.
