Galanthus ‘Primrose Warburg’
One of the most celebrated of the yellow-marked snowdrops, ‘Primrose Warburg’ was found in the garden of the formidable Oxfordshire galanthophile Primrose Warburg (1920–1996) at South Hayes, near Oxford. The plant was originally known to Mrs Warburg as ‘Yellow Top’, a wonderfully descriptive name for a snowdrop whose ovary glows an intense golden yellow. Following the dispersal of her remarkable collection after her death, John Grimshaw and others helped identify and distribute the plants, and this exceptional seedling was subsequently named in her honour.
A superb golden snowdrop, with grey-green, slightly rolled foliage and elegant white outer segments, sometimes carrying very faint green veining. The inner segments bear a conspicuous yellow-green marking across the sinus, while the ovary is an unusually intense, almost luminous yellow. The combination is particularly striking in the winter garden and makes ‘Primrose Warburg’ one of the most instantly recognisable members of the Gold Group.
Primrose Warburg herself was one of the great figures of twentieth-century galanthophily. Based at South Hayes, she built an important collection of snowdrops as well as crocuses and hellebores, and was instrumental in encouraging the enthusiasm for snowdrops that developed around Oxford. Her garden became a meeting place for the leading galanthophiles of the period, and her collection subsequently yielded several important cultivars, including ‘Primrose Warburg’ and ‘South Hayes’.
Interestingly, the exact parentage remains uncertain. It is generally treated as a hybrid cultivar, with some specialist sources suggesting G. nivalis × G. plicatus, rather than assigning it definitively to either species. The RHS accepts it simply as Galanthus ‘Primrose Warburg’.
A snowdrop of genuine historical importance as well as great beauty — a living reminder of Primrose Warburg’s extraordinary contribution to the world of Galanthus.
