Galanthus plicatus ‘Percy Picton’

A vigorous, distinctive and rather elegant Galanthus plicatus, ‘Percy Picton’ is especially notable for its very long, arching pedicels, which allow the flowers to sway freely in even the slightest breeze. The large, bright white flowers are carried well above the foliage, with broad outer segments and inner segments marked by a strong, bright-green X, accompanied by darker green basal markings. Mature bulbs frequently produce two scapes, often flowering together, and the cultivar is a good increaser. It was named in the 1970s for Percy Picton, father of Paul Picton of Old Court Nurseries near Malvern, in recognition of his contribution to horticulture. 

A particularly good choice for planting in groups, where the long pedicels give a lively, almost animated quality to the flowers. It is also notably late flowering, extending the snowdrop season well into March. 

Cultivation: Grow in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial shade or deciduous woodland. Avoid summer drought. Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
