Galanthus nivalis ‘Wessex Green' (S032)

A particularly interesting virescent selection of the common snowdrop, Galanthus nivalis ‘Wessex Green’ combines the familiar delicacy of the species with an unusually strong tendency towards green pigmentation. The flowers are attractively green-marked and, most unusually, the same bulb can produce both 3 × 3 and 4 × 4 flowers—that is, flowers with either three or four outer and inner segments. This variable merism gives established clumps an appealing individuality and makes ‘Wessex Green’ particularly interesting to collectors of green snowdrops and unusual forms of G. nivalis. It is also a strong-growing selection, combining botanical interest with good garden performance. 

Origin: Selected and introduced by Edulis Nursery in 2019, ‘Wessex Green’ carries the nursery’s progeny number S032, linking the named cultivar to its original breeding and selection records. The ‘Wessex’ series comprises snowdrops bred or selected at Edulis, with ‘Wessex Green’ representing a particularly attractive green-marked G. nivalis. 

A strong garden plant: ‘Wessex Green’ is an excellent choice for the collector who appreciates variation as much as conventional flower form. The strong growth is complemented by the unusual ability to produce both 3 × 3 and 4 × 4 flowers, while the green pigmentation gives the flowers considerable interest at close quarters. As a named selection of G. nivalis, it should also prove a reliable and readily established garden snowdrop.

In the garden: Grow in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial shade or an open position with good winter and early-spring light. Like other snowdrops, it should not be allowed to dry out while actively growing, although good drainage is important during summer dormancy. Particularly effective beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, in woodland-style planting or in a dedicated snowdrop collection where its unusual flowers can be examined at close range.
