A particularly attractive green-marked form of the common snowdrop, Galanthus nivalis ‘Greenwash’ is distinguished by a subtle green suffusion washing across the outer segments, complemented by a strong, neatly defined green marking on the inner segments. The colouring is restrained rather than excessive, leaving plenty of white around the flower while giving the impression that the outer segments have been lightly brushed with green. A neat and elegant selection, it combines the familiar proportions and reliability of G. nivalis with an unusually pleasing degree of green colouring.

Origin: Selected at Edulis Nursery in 2019 from Galanthus nivalis. The name ‘Greenwash’ is a deliberate play on words, referring both to the faint green wash across the outer segments and to the political and environmental term ‘greenwash’, describing the presentation of something as environmentally responsible through misleading or superficial claims. The cultivar is an Edulis Nursery selection.

A strong garden plant: ‘Greenwash’ is particularly appealing for the balance between its softly coloured outer segments and stronger inner marking. Rather than being overwhelmingly green, the flowers retain a clean white ground, allowing the subtle suffusion to give each bloom its character. It is an excellent choice for collectors of green-marked G. nivalis, but sufficiently vigorous and well proportioned to make an attractive garden plant when established.

In the garden: Grow in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial shade or an open position with good winter light. Keep the soil reasonably moist while actively growing, but avoid waterlogging during summer dormancy. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering and avoid unnecessary disturbance once established. Particularly effective beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, in woodland-style planting or towards the front of a dedicated snowdrop collection.
