Galanthus ‘Mighty Atom'

A legendary small snowdrop with an almost comically generous flower, Galanthus ‘Mighty Atom’ is one of the classic large-flowered, short-stemmed cultivars. The flowers are exceptionally large, rounded and bright white, carried on relatively short stems so that they sit prominently above the compact foliage. The inner segments bear a bold, deep green inverted-V marking, adding to the remarkable contrast and giving the plant an unusually substantial appearance for its modest stature. Its combination of dwarf habit and outsized flowers is the reason for the name, and it remains one of the most instantly recognisable snowdrops in cultivation. 

Origin: ‘Mighty Atom’ originated in the garden of the Suffolk snowdrop enthusiast John Gray at Benhall. Following Gray’s death in the 1950s, two notable snowdrops were found in his garden and passed to E. B. Anderson, one believed to be ‘Mighty Atom’. Anderson subsequently distributed plants under the name, but the later history is complicated by the fact that several distinct but closely similar clones appear to have circulated as ‘Mighty Atom’. This has led to the modern concept of the ‘Mighty Atom’ complex, rather than there necessarily being a single universally agreed clone representing the original plant. 

A strong garden plant: Despite its diminutive stature, ‘Mighty Atom’ has extraordinary presence when in flower. The huge, rounded blooms are particularly effective when viewed close to the ground, while the short, compact habit makes it an excellent subject for the front of a snowdrop bed, trough or rock garden. It is also an historically important cultivar, representing one of the classic British selections in which flower size was dramatically increased without a corresponding increase in plant height. 

In the garden: Grow in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial shade or an open position with good winter light. Like other snowdrops, it should not be allowed to dry out during active growth, although drainage is important during summer dormancy. Its naturally compact habit makes it particularly useful towards the front of woodland plantings, beneath deciduous shrubs or in a dedicated snowdrop collection where the remarkable flower-to-plant ratio can be appreciated.
