Galanthus ‘Margaret Owen’

A fine and substantial Galanthus elwesii with handsome, broad, glaucous foliage and good-sized, well-shaped flowers. The inner segments carry a particularly bold, pronounced V-shaped green marking, with little or no sinus notch, giving the flowers a strong and immediately recognisable character. A mid- to late-flowering cultivar that is particularly impressive when established in a good-sized clump, where its combination of flower quality, substance and vigour can really be appreciated.

Origin: A seedling selected by Margaret Owen during a visit to Ray Cobb’s garden in Nottinghamshire. It was considered likely to have arisen from a nearby clump of Galanthus elwesii ‘Brian Mathew’, which has a similar inner-segment marking. Margaret selected it for its exceptional quality and, particularly, for the magnificent effect it produced when grown as a clump. 

In the garden: A choice snowdrop for naturalising beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, where its broad foliage and substantial flowers make a strong late-winter display. Particularly rewarding when allowed to build a large clump. Grow in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil and leave undisturbed once established.
