Galanthus nivalis (Sandersii Group) ‘Lowick’

One of the classic yellow forms of the common snowdrop, Galanthus nivalis (Sandersii Group) ‘Lowick’ is a neat and distinctive selection with clear yellow colouring throughout the flower. The ovary is bright yellow and the inner segments carry strong yellow markings, contrasting beautifully with the pure white outer segments. Compact, floriferous and reliable, it combines the charm of G. nivalis with the warm colouring that makes the Sandersii Group so desirable.

Origin: A yellow selection of Galanthus nivalis from Northumberland, associated with Lowick and subsequently named ‘Lowick’. The clone was later propagated and distributed by Cambo Estate, Fife, becoming established within the estate’s celebrated snowdrop collection and subsequently reaching other collections and nurseries. The precise date and circumstances of the original selection are not recorded.

A strong garden plant: ‘Lowick’ combines good vigour, a compact habit and clear yellow colouring. The yellow ovary and inner markings contrast particularly well with the white outer segments, while its modest stature makes it useful towards the front of a snowdrop collection. A dependable Sandersii Group snowdrop and an excellent choice for anyone wanting a good yellow G. nivalis with proven garden performance.

In the garden: Grow in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial shade or an open position with good winter light. Keep the soil reasonably moist during active growth but avoid waterlogging, particularly during summer dormancy. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering and avoid unnecessary disturbance once established. Particularly effective beneath deciduous trees and shrubs or towards the front of a dedicated yellow snowdrop collection.
