A distinctive green-marked form of Galanthus elwesii with beautifully suffused green inner segments. Rather than the usual neat green marking, the colour spreads extensively across the inner segments, giving the flowers a particularly rich, almost painted appearance. A vigorous plant reaching around 30cm, with the substantial stature expected of G. elwesii.

Origin: Found by Paul Barney at Ashampstead in 2011, growing on the edge of a population of Alliaria petiolata — the plant commonly known as Jack-by-the-Hedge. The discovery habitat provided the inspiration for the rather splendid name.

In the garden: A vigorous and distinctive collector’s snowdrop, best planted where its unusually suffused green markings can be appreciated at close quarters. Moist, humus-rich soil in partial shade suits it well.

Height: 25–30cm
Spread: 15–25cm
Flowering: January–February
Hardiness: H5 (−15 to −10°C)
Aspect: Partial shade
Soil: Moist, humus-rich, well drained
