Galanthus 'Ivington Green'

A spectacular and highly distinctive snowdrop discovered by Roger and Sue Norman in the garden of their nursery, Ivycroft Plants, at Ivington Green in Herefordshire. Introduced in 2018, ‘Ivington Green’ is a particularly impressive pterugiform hybrid, producing exceptionally broad outer segments that are strongly marked with green. 

The flowers are large and unusually substantial, with the broad outer segments giving them a bold, almost shield-like appearance. Green colouring extends prominently over the outer segments, while the inner segments are strongly marked, creating a flower with considerable visual weight. The flowers are held well above the foliage, allowing the unusual shape and colouring to be appreciated to particularly good effect. It is reported to become even more impressive as the season progresses, with the flowers increasing in size. 

The pterugiform character is what really sets ‘Ivington Green’ apart. Rather than simply being another green-tipped snowdrop, its very broad outer segments give the flower a distinctive architectural quality, while the strong green markings add another layer of interest. It is a comparatively recent introduction but has already become one of the more sought-after snowdrops associated with the Norman collection at Ivycroft.

The name reflects its provenance at Ivington Green, just south-west of Leominster, where Roger Norman continues to grow and offer the cultivar at Ivycroft Plants. 

Cultivation: Grow in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial shade or deciduous woodland. Avoid prolonged summer drought and winter waterlogging. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering. Best planted where the large, broad flowers can be viewed closely, as their unusual pterugiform form is a major part of the plant’s appeal.
