Galanthus ‘Ione Hecker’
A rare and beautifully proportioned short snowdrop of the ‘Mighty Atom’ group, with a particularly distinguished history. The cultivar was originally obtained from Michael Upward and subsequently became associated with the collections of Bob and Rannveig Wallis, who exhibited it successfully at Alpine Garden Society shows. It was awarded Best in Show at an AGS show in 2006, a considerable accolade for such a diminutive plant.
The flowers are carried neatly on short stems above attractive blue-green foliage, with the inner segments marked by the characteristic inverted green V of the ‘Mighty Atom’ group. At only around 12 cm tall, it is a compact snowdrop with excellent proportions rather than a plant that relies on sheer size for impact.
The name commemorates Ione Hecker, an important figure in the Alpine Garden Society and an accomplished plantswoman and plant selector. Her contribution to alpine horticulture is still remembered through the Ione Hecker Memorial Trophy, awarded by the AGS for the best pan of Primulaceae. Interestingly, Mrs Hecker was herself a selector of plants: she chose Oxalis ‘Ione Hecker’ as the outstanding seedling from a batch raised by the celebrated plantsman E. B. Anderson.
A particularly desirable collector’s snowdrop — small, elegant and historically significant, with a pedigree that links Michael Upward, the Wallises and the Alpine Garden Society.
Cultivation: Plant in autumn, ideally as soon as possible after lifting, in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Grow in partial shade beneath deciduous trees or shrubs, where winter and early-spring light reaches the plants but summer conditions remain cooler. Its relatively short stature makes it particularly effective near paths, at the front of woodland plantings or in raised beds and troughs where the flowers can be appreciated close-up.
