Galanthus elwesii ‘Hercule’

A magnificent, very large-flowered form of Galanthus elwesii, ‘Hercule’ is a snowdrop of impressive scale, combining substantial flowers with exceptionally broad, luxuriant leaves. The flowers are carried prominently above the foliage, while the sheer size of the plant gives it a commanding presence among winter snowdrops. Its robust proportions make it particularly distinctive, and the generous foliage is an important part of its character.

Origin: Selected by Mark Brown and named in 2003 in honour of Hercule Poirot, the celebrated fictional Belgian detective created by Agatha Christie. The name is particularly apt for a snowdrop with such an unmistakable presence and rather formidable proportions.

In the garden: A superb collector’s snowdrop for those who appreciate large and imposing forms. Plant where its substantial foliage has room to develop naturally, ideally beneath deciduous trees or shrubs. Best grown in humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage and left undisturbed once established.
