Galanthus ‘Faringdon Double’

One of the earliest and most dependable double snowdrops, Galanthus ‘Faringdon Double’ is a handsome, substantial cultivar with large, well-shaped flowers carried on sturdy, upright to slightly arching stems. The normal complement of three outer segments is distinctly ridged, enclosing a neat, full centre formed by additional inner segments, usually around twice the normal number. The glaucous foliage is spreading and provides an attractive contrast to the crisp white flowers. Particularly valuable for its exceptionally early flowering, it can be in bloom around Christmas, making it one of the very best snowdrops for starting the season with a properly substantial double. 

Origin: Found in a churchyard at Faringdon, Oxfordshire, in 1988 by the noted snowdrop enthusiasts David and Ruby Baker, who subsequently named and distributed it. The cultivar is now widely recognised as one of the earliest-flowering double snowdrops. Its flowers are notable for their regularity, with the additional inner segments creating a particularly neat, formal appearance. 

A strong garden plant: ‘Faringdon Double’ is an exceptionally useful early snowdrop, flowering considerably ahead of most of the main-season cultivars and often beginning around mid-December. Its large flowers, sturdy habit and relatively long flowering period make it especially valuable in the winter garden, while the double flowers tend to remain presentable for longer than many singles. It is also a good clumper when established, making it much more than simply a collector’s curiosity. 

In the garden: Grow in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial shade or an open position with good winter light. The sturdy stems allow the flowers to stand up well to winter weather, while the early flowering makes planting beneath deciduous trees and shrubs particularly effective. It is also excellent beside paths or near the house, where its unusually early flowers can be appreciated at close quarters.
