Galanthus 'Essex Girl'

A wonderfully characterful hybrid from Glen Chantry, Galanthus ‘Essex Girl’ is one of those snowdrops that refuses to look quite like anything else. Its most obvious feature is the remarkable texture of the outer segments, which have distinctly frilled, almost wrinkled edges, giving the flower an unusually light and slightly ruffled appearance. The outer segments carry a broken green crescent towards their tips, while the inner segments are marked with two green lines rising from the ovary and a bold, inverted U-shaped mark towards the apex. 

‘Essex Girl’ was introduced from the garden of Sue and Wol Staines at Glen Chantry, and is a seedling selection rather than a named botanical species or straightforward form of G. nivalis. It has become particularly sought after for the combination of its strongly textured outer segments and distinctive inner markings. Indeed, photographs rather fail to convey one of its best features—the wrinkled, frilly texture of the outer petals, which becomes much more apparent when the flower is seen in the flesh.

The flowers are relatively large and elegantly proportioned, with the outer segments opening sufficiently to display their green crescent while the inner segments curl slightly outwards. The overall effect is exuberant rather than formal: a snowdrop with a little more movement, texture and attitude than most. The growers at Glen Chantry are said to have christened it ‘Essex Girl’ for its rather “all singing, all dancing” character—a description that seems remarkably apt. 

Flowering is generally around mid-February, placing it comfortably in the middle of the main snowdrop season. It makes a useful clump-forming garden plant and, like most hybrids, benefits from being allowed to establish properly before being divided.

Cultivation: Grow in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial shade, ideally beneath deciduous trees or shrubs. Keep adequately moist while in active growth but avoid waterlogged conditions. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering and avoid unnecessary disturbance. The intricate texture of the flowers makes it particularly effective where the plants can be viewed close-up.
