particularly fine, large-flowered and vigorous form of Galanthus elwesii var. elwesii, named for Stockcross, the Berkshire village where it originated. The original bulb was given to Paul Barney in 2016, and from that single large bulb it quickly demonstrated an exceptional ability to bulk up and establish. Unlike some large forms of G. elwesii that take their time settling in, ‘Stockcross Gem’ is remarkably vigorous, producing strong growth and rapidly forming substantial clumps.

The flowers are large and well proportioned, carried above broad, robust foliage, making this an especially useful selection where a bold display of G. elwesii is wanted. It flowers reliably from midwinter and, given good conditions, makes an impressive sight surprisingly quickly.

Best grown in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial shade. Plant beneath deciduous trees or shrubs, or amongst woodland perennials, and allow established clumps to remain undisturbed.
