Galanthus ‘Dryad Gold Charm’

One of the most distinctive of the Dryad Gold snowdrops, Galanthus ‘Dryad Gold Charm’ is a diminutive but remarkably elegant hybrid, with exceptionally long, narrow buds opening into large, elongated, teardrop-shaped flowers. The broad, smooth outer segments contrast beautifully with the narrowly cylindrical yellow ovary, while the inner segments carry a soft greenish-yellow inverted heart extending to about half their length. The flowers are held on very upright scapes, giving this little snowdrop an unusually poised appearance. Although small in stature, the flowers are relatively large, making it an especially attractive subject for close observation in a pot or raised bed. 

Origin: Raised by Anne Wright of Dryad Nursery as part of the Dryad Gold Group, a series of Galanthus hybrids developed from crosses involving G. plicatus and G. nivalis. The hybrids combine the yellow colouring sought in the breeding programme with the vigour and garden performance associated with their hybrid parentage. They are classified as Galanthus × valentinei. ‘Dryad Gold Charm’ was among the named cultivars selected by Anne Wright and registered as part of the Dryad Gold Group. 

A little gem: ‘Gold Charm’ is one of the smaller Dryad Golds, flowering at around 10cm, but its flowers are unusually long at approximately 40mm. The combination of upright stems, elongated buds and the warm yellow-and-green inner marking gives it considerable character despite its modest dimensions. The bulbs are described as vigorous and increasing well, making it rather more than simply a collector’s curiosity. 

In the garden: Particularly good in a pot or alpine trough, where its small stature and unusually shaped flowers can be appreciated at close quarters, but perfectly happy planted out in the garden. Grow in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil, preferably in partial shade or good winter light. Like other snowdrops, it should not be allowed to become excessively dry during active growth, while summer drainage should remain good.
