Galanthus plicatus ‘Collosus’

A magnificent early-flowering snowdrop from Colesbourne Park, Gloucestershire, ‘Colossus’ is one of the largest and most imposing forms of Galanthus plicatus. It was discovered by Caroline Elwes as a vigorous clump at Colesbourne, where it has subsequently been propagated extensively. It was formerly circulated as ‘Colesbourne’ or ‘Colesbourne Colossus’ before the name ‘Colossus’ became established. 

The name is entirely appropriate: plants produce huge, broad, strongly pleated, glossy glaucous leaves and substantial white flowers held on strong, slightly angled scapes. The inner segments carry a small green apical mark. Particularly vigorous plants can produce two flowers from a bulb, and it is capable of making impressive clumps. It is exceptionally early for G. plicatus, often flowering around Christmas or in the first weeks of the New Year. 

Cultivation: Best in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in sun or light deciduous shade. Avoid summer drought. Excellent for naturalising beneath trees and shrubs; allow foliage to die back naturally.
