Galanthus transcaucasicus (syn. Galanthus artjuschenkoae)

A rather choice Caucasian snowdrop, Galanthus artjuschenkoae was described from the southern Transcaucasus and northern Iran, but its taxonomic status has proved considerably less straightforward than its name suggests. It is a relatively robust snowdrop with broad green foliage and the characteristic pendent white flowers marked green on the inner segments.

Origin: Southern and eastern Transcaucasus to northern Iran, occurring in the Caucasian region where several closely related Galanthus taxa overlap. 

In the garden: A good woodland snowdrop for cool, humus-rich soil, particularly under deciduous trees where it can enjoy moisture in spring and increasing light as the canopy develops.

• Nomenclature note: Kew’s current Plants of the World Online does not accept Galanthus artjuschenkoae Gabrieljan as a separate species, treating it as a synonym of Galanthus transcaucasicus Fomin. The name was published in 1999, but molecular work has also found G. artjuschenkoae nested within the broader Caucasian Galanthus complex.
