Eutrochium fistulosum 'Berggarten'
Joe Pye Weed Asteraceae
A statuesque Joe-Pye Weed with no intention whatsoever of being overlooked. ‘Berggarten’ forms robust, upright stems carrying whorls of broad, toothed leaves, eventually topped by large, fluffy heads of dusky pink flowers in late summer. The effect is wonderfully architectural, particularly when planted towards the back of a border where its height can be properly appreciated.
And then there are the pollinators. The broad flowerheads are packed with tiny nectar- and pollen-rich florets, attracting bumblebees, honeybees, solitary bees, hoverflies, bee-flies and butterflies, making it particularly valuable in late summer when the nectar supply of many gardens is beginning to thin.
Native to eastern North America, E. fistulosum is naturally found in moist meadows, marshes, stream margins and other moisture-retentive habitats. Give ‘Berggarten’ rich, moist soil in sun or light shade and allow it plenty of room—this is not a plant that believes in shrinking violets.
Height: 1.5–2m

- Nomenclature & origin note: The correct cultivar spelling is ‘Berggarten’, The name is German for “mountain garden” and may suggest an association with the famous Berggarten at Herrenhausen, Hanover, but we have found no reliable primary evidence that the cultivar originated there. It was listed by Cally Gardens in Britain from around 2002 and is presumed to be of German origin. The plant is currently treated by the RHS as* Eutrochium fistulosum ‘Berggarten’, with older literature frequently using Eupatorium names. RHS — Eutrochium fistulosum ‘Berggarten’
Please note: depending on the time of year, some plants may be cut back before dispatch. This is normal horticultural practice and helps ensure plants arrive in good condition and establish strongly after planting.
